Craig Counsell goes on DL

PHOENIX, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Craig Counsell, who has not played since last Thursday due to discomfort in his neck, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.

Catcher Damian Miller, sidelined since July 24 with a lower back strain, was activated from the disabled list and will replace Counsell on the roster.

Counsell has played in 112 games this season and is one of the Diamondbacks' most versatile players, starting 88 times at third base, 11 at shortstop and 10 at second. He is hitting .282 with two homers and 51 RBI.

The 31-year-old Counsell played catch before Tuesday's game in Cincinnati, but continued to be bothered by pain and numbness that shot down his arm. As a result, he was placed on the disabled list for the first time since missing the final two months of the 1998 season with the Florida Marlins because of a fractured jaw.

Counsell is in his third season with Arizona and also has played for Colorado and Los Angeles.

Miller is hitting .259 with nine homers and 36 RBI this season.
