MANKATO, Minn., Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The Minnesota Vikings, going about business as usual in the wake of reports that they are about to be sold by team owner Red McCombs, Wednesday released two players, backup quarterback Spergon Wynn and wide receiver Devin Lewis.

New Vikings Coach Mike Tice indicated that Wynn did not fit into the team's plans.

"Spergon Wynn, we felt that (University of Maryland rookie) Shaun Hill had moved ahead of Spergon," said Tice. "He's a veteran player we thought that if we let him go know he might have a chance to go with somebody and this will give Shaun a chance to develop within our system. Devin Lewis just got caught up in numbers. When Derrick Alexander came back, we didn't need that many pairs of legs. Not everybody can get reps. We really have great competition going on between Kelly Campbell, Kenny Clark, Atrews Bell and Nick Davis. I think they just kind of moved themselves a head of Devin. He's a good kid. We don't want to hang on to him too long. Somebody might want a young receiver so we gave him a chance to go somewhere."

Wynn, a Houston native who played collegiately at Southwest Texas State, started the final two games of the Vikings' 2001 season and three overall. He managed one touchdown pass against four interceptions in the finale against Baltimore.

In three games overall, he was 48-of-98 for 418 yards, with one touchdown, six interceptions and two lost fumbles.
