WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Jerome Golmard of France Monday upset the 11th-seed, Jan Michael Gambrill of the United States, 7-6 (7-1), 1-6, 6-4, to reach the second round of the $800,000 Legg Mason Tennis Classic in the nation's capital.

Gambill has posted 17 of his 21 match wins this season on hard courts in his home country. Last month, he reached the Los Angeles final and advanced to three consecutive semifinals earlier this season at Memphis, San Jose and Delray Beach.

Golmard had lost in the opening round of his last four tournaments before edging Gambrill.

12th-seeded Fernando Vicente of Spain held off Olivier Rochus of Belgium, 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, and the 14th-seed, Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, got past Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

The Czech Republic's Jan Vacek, the 15th seed, rallied past American Vincent Spadea, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, and Brazil's Fernando Meligeni, the 16th seed, turned back Japan's Takao Suzuki, 6-4, 7-6

(7-1).

American veteran Michael Chang, a two-time champion here, moved into the second round with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Britain's Martin Lee.

Last week, Chang enjoyed his best outing since January, upsetting Germany's Tommy Haas on the way to the third round at the Tennis Masters Series event in Cincinnati.
