Plummer played the first quarter and hooked up with muscular wide receiver David Boston on a 66-yard touchdown pass. Plummer went 5-of-7 for 101 yards.

While Plummer firmly is entrenched as the Cardinals quarterback, veteran Doug Flutie and second-year pro Drew Brees are waging a battle to win the job in San Diego.

The incumbent, Flutie started and went 6-of-9 for 46 yards.

Brees was 8-of-13 for 60 yards. He also had interception returned 38 yards for a touchdown by David Barrett.

Third-stringer Dave Dickenson had a 15-yard touchdown pass to Pat Batteaux in the third quarter for the Chargers, who lost in the debut of new coach Marty Schottenheimer.
