NEW YORK, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees Thursday activated All-Star closer Mariano Rivera before their afternoon's game against the Kansas City Royals.
Rivera had been on the disabled list since July 26, six days after he was forced to leave a game against the Boston Red Sox because of stiffness, or pitching, in his right shoulder. It was his second stint on the DL this season. He was sidelined by a strained groin in June.
The veteran Panamanian righthander had been rehabbing in Tampa, Fla., and threw two scoreless innings Tuesday in a Class A game.
"I feel great. I'm ready to go," Rivera said after his rehab appearance on Tuesday.
The Yankees optioned righthander Mike Thurman to Triple-A Columbus to make room for Rivera. In last Sunday's win at Anaheim, Thurman threw four scoreless innings in relief.
Rivera, 32, had allowed seven runs and seven hits in his last four appearances before being placed on the DL. He is 1-4 with 24 saves and a 3.06 ERA in 35 appearances this season.
He is the Yankees all-time leader in saves with 239, set a club record with 50 saves in 2001, and has averaged 42 over the last five seasons.
