SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Barry Bonds hit a pair of ropes but failed to produce his 600th career home run. Dribblers by Tom Goodwin and Benito Santiago produced a win Wednesday for the San Francisco Giants.
Jeff Kent raced home with the winning run on Santiago's infield hit in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Giants pulled out their fourth straight win, 4-3 over the Chicago Cubs.
After hitting a two-run homer in the fifth, Kent started the Giants' 10th with a one-out single to center field. He moved up on a wild pitch by Antonio Alfonseca (1-3) and took third when Goodwin legged out a chopper off the plate. Alfonseca's next pitch was in on the fists, but Santiago hit a slow roller to the left of the mound and Kent beat Alfonseca's throw to the plate.
The consecutive singles made a winner of Robb Nen (5-1), who blew a save in the top of the ninth the night after recording the 300th of his career.
Bonds remained stuck on 599 homers. He gave the crowd a thrill in the bottom of the first when he flied to the warning track in left-center field, took a third strike in the third, lined a double to the gap in right-center in the fifth and walked in the eighth before leaving for a pinch runner.
