SAN DIEGO, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Ryan Klesko homered and drove in three runs and rookie Jake Peavy tossed 6 2/3 effective innings Wednesday night as the San Diego Padres snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
After erasing a 1-0 deficit in the third with consecutive one-out RBI singles by Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell, Philadelphia loaded the bases. But Travis Lee and Tomas Perez grounded out to end a potentially big inning and drop the Phillies' average with the bases loaded to .170.
Klesko tied it with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame before putting the Padres in front with a two-run homer in the fifth off Philadelphia starter Vicente Padilla (11-7), who yielded five runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Peavy (3-4) allowed two runs and seven hits while striking out five and walking one. Closer Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth to notch his 28th save and move into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time list with 342, passing Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers.
