SEATTLE, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Looking to bolster their bench, the Seattle Mariners acquired infielder Jose Offerman from the Boston Red Sox Thursday for cash considerations.
Offerman, 33, was designated for assignment by the Red Sox one week ago. He batted just .232 with four homers and 27 RBI in 72 games this season, seeing action at first base and designated hitter.
"We think Jose will strengthen our bench," Mariners general manager Pat Gillick said. "He's a switch hitter that can play a variety of positions, including first base, and with his experience he provides Lou (Manager Lou Piniella) with some more options."
Offerman is a two-time former All-Star who played in the postseason with Los Angeles in 1995 and Boston in 1999, batting .474.
The Mariners are in first place in the American League West Division with a 70-44 mark, 2 1/2 games in front of Anaheim. They are seeking their third straight playoff berth.
Offerman is making $6.75 million this season in the final year of a lucrative four-year deal he signed with Boston as a free agent in 1999. Originally a shortstop, he also has played for Kansas City and has career marks of a .275 average, 52 homers, 498 RBI and 170 stolen bases in 1,459 games.
