Mets, Padres in 5-man swap

NEW YORK, July 31 (UPI) -- The New York Mets added some bullpen help for the stretch run Wednesday, acquiring righthander Steve Reed from the San Diego Padres.

The Mets also acquired righthander Jason Middlebrook from the Padres, who received lefthander Bobby Jones and a pair of minor leaguers -- righthander Josh Reynolds and outfielder Jason Bay -- in return.

The 36-year-old Reed was 2-4 with one save and a 1.98 ERA in 40 appearances for the Padres this season. He has appeared in the postseason four times with Colorado, Cleveland and Atlanta.

Reed also has pitched for San Francisco and is 40-30 with 18 saves and a 3.57 ERA in 647 major league games.

Middlebrook, 26, is currently on the disabled list with a strained right groin and was sent to Norfolk of the Class AAA International League to continue a rehabilitation assignment.

Middlebrook was 1-3 with a 5.09 ERA in 12 games, including two starts, for the Padres this season.

Jones was 0-0 with a 5.29 ERA in 12 games for the Mets before being designated for assignment last week. The 30-year-old will be reunited with Bobby J. Jones, a righthander for the Padres. The two were teammates on the Mets in 2000.
