SEATTLE, July 24 (UPI) -- The Seattle Mariners Wednesday added depth to their bullpen, acquiring lefthander Doug Creek from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for cash considerations.
In 29 appearances with Tampa Bay, Creek was 2-1 with a 6.27 ERA. The journeyman allowed 26 earned runs and 39 hits in 37 1/3 innings, walking 21 and striking out 37.
Designated for assignment by the Devil Rays on Saturday after allowing five runs in two innings the day before, the 33-year-old Creek has played for St. Louis, San Francisco and the Chicago Cubs during his seven-year career, going 6-13 with a
5.32 ERA.
"We've been looking for an experienced lefthander to give us another option out of the bullpen," Seattle general manager Pat Gillick said. "We think Doug can fill that role for us."
To make room for Creek on the 40-man roster, the Mariners designated lefthander Mark Watson for assignment.
