Dokic moves into quarterfinals

STANFORD, Calif., July 24 (UPI) -- Jelena Dokic, the fifth seed from Yugoslavia, rallied Wednesday to beat Spanish wild card Conchita Martinez, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic.

There were two other second-round contests scheduled for Wednesday night. No. 2 Lindsay Davenport of the United States took on Anne Kremer of Luxembourg, and fellow American and No. 3 Monica Seles faced Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn.

The 19-year-old Dokic has won all four of her meetings with Martinez this year. She won their first-round meeting at Sarasota in April en route to a title at the claycourt event.

Dokic also topped the veteran Spaniard on the way to the Hamburg claycourt semifinals and French Open quarterfinals.

However, this marked Dokic's first win in five career hardcourt meetings with Martinez.

"I didn't play well. I wasn't in the match at all. After the first set, I just made her play a lot longer balls," Dokic said. "I didn't run in the first set. The second and third sets, I changed completely."
