Colorado 3, New England 2

FOXBORO, Mass., July 24 (UPI) -- A goal by All-Star Mark Chung proved to be the game-winner Wednesday night as the Colorado Rapids downed the New England Revolution, 3-2.

Colorado took the lead in the 34th minute. A pass from from Robin Fraser was one-touched by John Spencer toward Chris Henderson, who was making a run down the left side of the box. The former U.S. national team star and All-Star selection beat the offside trap and slammed a right-footed shot past Juergen Sommer for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Revolution Coach Steve Nicol brought on another forward, rookie Ian Fuller, to start the second half and the home team applied pressure immediately. The Revolution earned a penalty kick in the 52nd minute after a hand ball by Wes Hart in the box. Taylor Twellman added to his League-leading goal total by converting the spot kick inside the right post for his 15th tally of the season.

Just as New England got back in the match, the Rapids took advantage of two defensive lapses to take a 3-1 lead. In the 58th minute Zach Kingsley picked up a poor defensive clearance of his own cross from the right side of the box.

The rookie controlled with his left and then moved the ball to his right foot, driving a strong, angled shot inside the far left post for his first career goal.

In the 63rd minute, Chung also capitalized on a short clearance to score the Rapids' third goal of the night. Sommer came off his line in an attempt to punch away a lofted ball in the area but he could not knock it away. Before defender Joey Franchino could send the ball out, Chung charged in to win the ball at the top of the box and slammed it home.
