Red Sox activate Dustin Hermanson

NEW YORK, July 20 (UPI) -- Righthander Dustin Hermanson, after spending more than three-and-a-half months on the disabled list, was activated Saturday by the Boston Red Sox.

Hermanson slipped on a wet mound and suffered a severe strain of his right groin in the first inning of his Red Sox debut April 3 in a game that eventually was postponed due to rain.

The Red Sox optioned rookie utility player Bryant Nelson to Class AAA Pawtucket of the International League to make room on the roster for Hermanson.

Penciled in as one of Boston's top four starters after being acquired last December from St. Louis, the 29-year-old Hermanson will work in the bullpen until the Red Sox believe he is ready to take a spot in the rotation.
