Minnesota 14, Detroit 6

DETROIT, July 20 (UPI) -- Joe Mays threw six effective innings in his first start since April 14 and Bobby Kielty went four for four with a home run and three RBI Saturday night as the Minnesota Twins pounded the Detroit Tigers, 14-4.

Sidelined for more than three months with inflammation in his right elbow, Mays (1-2) allowed three runs and seven hits for his first win since Sept. 21. The 26-year-old righthander struck out two without a walk to improve to 8-3 lifetime against the Tigers.

Kielty belted a two-run homer in the second inning before stroking an RBI triple in the fourth for the Twins, who have won four straight. He added singles in the seventh and eighth innings for his second career four-hit game.

David Ortiz posted his second career multi-homer game, slugging shots in the fifth and seventh innings,while rookie Michael Cuddyer hit his first major league homer for Minnesota, which holds a 12-game lead in the American League Central.

Detroit starter Adam Bernero (2-6) dropped his fourth straight decision, surrendering eight runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Winless since June 10, Bernero has allowed 29 earned runs in his last 26 1/3 innings.

Carlos Pena belted his first homer as a member of the Tigers, who have lost five in a row.
