Miami 61, Minnesota 58

MINNEAPOLIS, July 19 (UPI) -- Sheri Sam and Sandy Brondello each scored 11 points as the Miami Sol held off a late charge Friday night to post their first victory over the Minnesota Lynx, 61-58.

Betty Lennox collected 10 points and seven boards off the bench and Vanessa Nygaard added nine points for the Sol, who were 0-4 all-time against the Lynx.

After Ruth Riley completed a three-point play with 2:34 left to give Miami a 61-52 advantage, Tamara Moore and Shaunzinski Gortman nailed 3-pointers to pull Minnesota within range.

But the Lynx were unable to close the gap further, suffering their seventh straight loss after Katie Smith's desperation 3-point heave at the buzzer missed everything.

Smith scored 12 points, Tamika Williams had 11 and Janell Burse chipped in 10 for Minnesota, which erased an eight-point halftime deficit when Williams' jumper with 11:35 to play tied it at 44-44.

The Sol, winners of five of their last six games, countered with a 10-2 run, capped by Lennox's jumper with 5:23 remaining.

Sam did most of her scoring early in the second half, hitting two buckets and a 3-pointer for all of Miami's points during the first 8:39.
