SAN DIEGO, July 17 (UPI) -- Jake Peavy allowed one run over seven innings to earn his first major league victory and Ron Gant's three-run homer highlighted a four-run first inning Tuesday night as San Diego posted a 5-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

After Colorado's Dennis Stark bested Oliver Perez in Monday's opener of this two-game set, Peavy (1-3) scattered five hits, struck out six and walked two in his fourth big league start.

Mike Holtz yielded two hits and walked one, retiring just two batters before Steve Reed struck out two over 1 1/3 innings to notch his first save.

Rookies rookie Jason Jennings (9-5) surrendered four runs in the first inning, but tossed five scoreless innings thereafter. Just one day shy of his 24th birthday, Jennings gave up five hits, struck out six and walked three but lost for the third time in four decisions.

San Diego snapped a three-game losing streak and won for only the fifth time in its last 20 games.

The Rockies have lost five of their last seven contests.
