Top seeds advance in Casablanca

CASABLANCA, Morocco, July 10 (UPI) -- Defending champion Zsofia Gubacsi of Hungary cruised into the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lenka Nemeckova of the Czech Republic.

The seventh-seeded Gubacsi collected her first career WTA Tour title at the claycourt event a year ago, rallying past Maria Elena Camerin of Italy in the final.

In the final first-round match, Camerin posted a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Morocco's Bahia Mouhtassine.

Three of the four seeded players in action on Wednesday reached the last eight.

Petra Mandula of Hungary, the third seed, marched into her third quarterfinal of the year, getting past Marie-Eve Pelletier of Canada, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Ludmila Cernanova of Slovakia, the fourth seed, hammered Ainhoa B. Goni of Spain, 6-1, 6-2.

In the lone upset of a seeded player on Wednesday, Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia crushed No. 5 Conchita Martinez-Granados of Spain, 6-1, 6-0.

Cernanova and Kuznetsova will clash in the quarterfinals.
