Minnesota 7, Seattle 2

SEATTLE, July 7 (UPI) -- David Ortiz, Matt LeCroy and All-Star Torii Hunter homered Saturday night as the Minnesota Twins pounded out 16 hits while taking a 7-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Ortiz's fifth homer with one out in the second staked the Twins to a 2-0 lead and ended Seattle starter Jaime Moyer's scoreless streak at 24 1/3 innings.

Moyer (8-4), who had not surrendered a run since June 16 at San Diego, was reached for five runs and 12 hits through seven innings.

It was the veteran lefthander's worst start in nearly a month.

Bret Boone was hit by Twins starter Kyle Lohse with two outs in the third and when Ortiz led off the fourth, he was hit and both benches emptied. Boone was hit above the elbow and Moyer responded by hitting Ortiz above the waist.

The 6-4, 230-pound Ortiz walked toward the 6-foot, 175-pound Moyer but was held back by Seattle catcher Ben Davis. Lohse charged out of the dugout but was restrained by teammate Denny Hocking.

There were no ejections or warnings, however, and one inning later, LeCroy's fourth homer increased Minnesota's lead to 4-0. Hunter's 20th homer capped his seventh three-hit game of the season and gave the Twins a five-run cushion in the seventh.

While Moyer was being roughed up, Lohse (8-5) overcame five walks and kept Seattle's offense quiet. He allowed four hits and struck out six in six scoreless innings.

The Mariners had at least two runners on in four innings, loading the bases in the third against Lohse. But they stranded 16 runners, tying a team record.

With the Twins protecting a 6-2 lead, LaTroy Hawkins put two men on in in the eighth before retiring Ruben Sierra on a groundout.

Minnesota became the eighth team in the majors to win 50 games and has recorded consecutive victories in Seattle for the first time since April 25-26, 1998.
