DENVER, July 5 (UPI) -- Todd Zeile and Brent Butler had three hits apiece Friday night as the Colorado Rockies capitalized on some shoddy defense to defeat the San Diego Padres, 9-6.
San Diego made six errors, two of them coming from Deivi Cruz in the first inning. Cruz made an errant throw on what would have been the third out to bring home two runs and give Colorado a four-run bulge.
The Rockies took advantage of two more San Diego errors in the sixth, scoring four times for a 9-3 cushion. The runs proved costly for the Padres, who rallied for three in the ninth inning.
But Colorado closer Jose Jimenez got Bubba Trammell, the potential tying run, to ground out for his 22nd save.
Rockies starter Mike Hampton (5-9) yielded three runs and eight hits in six innings, defeating San Diego for the first time in his last five meetings.
San Diego starter Brett Tomko (4-6) was the hard-luck loser, yielding five runs -- three earned -- and six hits in five innings.
