ST. LOUIS, July 3 (UPI) -- Tino Martinez hit a two-run homer in the fourth and rookie Jason Simontacchi allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings Wednesday night as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Diego Padres, 4-1.
St. Louis erased a 1-0 deficit when Martinez crushed a 2-2 pitch from starter Brian Lawrence (7-5) out to right-center, scoring Albert Pujols.
Named National League Rookie of the Month for June earlier in the day, Simontacchi (7-1) improved to 5-0 at Busch Stadium with a 2.12 ERA. The righthander allowed a homer to Ron Gant among five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Jason Isringhausen fired a perfect ninth, completing the five-hitter and notching his 18th save in 20 chances.
