D.C. United 1, Los Angeles 0 (OT)

WASHINGTON, June 29 (UPI) -- Midfielder Bobby Convey tallied the game-winning golden goal in the 98th minute Saturday night to give D.C. United a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy.

United midfielder Marco Etcheverry, the all-time assist leader in Major League Soccer history, began the scoring play by finding teammate Ivan McKinley on the wing.

McKinley bent a cross into the penalty box from the left side, finding Convey, who headed home the ball past goalkeeper Kevin Hartman for the win. The goal was Convey's first of the season.

On two occasions late in the game, Los Angeles nearly escaped RFK Stadium with the victory. During extra time in the second half, the Galaxy's Carlos Ruiz broke free on a 40-yard run, only to see his one-on-one opportunity smothered by United goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

Rimando, who came off his line several times throughout the game and aggressively controlled the United penalty box, was saved during the first overtime by the woodwork. Two minutes after Ruiz' effort was smothered by Rimando, Los Angeles midfielder Simon Elliot smacked the crossbar with a 17-yard blast that was only inches away from ending the game.
