Scott Riggs wins Busch pole

SPARTA, Ky., June 14 (UPI) -- Scott Riggs captured the pole position Friday for Saturday night's Busch Series Kroger 300 at Kentucky Speedway.

Driving a Ford, Riggs blistered the sun-drenched speedway with a time of 30.887 seconds, posting an average speed of 174.831 miles per hour.

Led by Riggs, 12 cars bested Jay Sauter's former track record. Riggs' time was a half-second quicker than Sauter's mark, set a year ago in the inaugural Busch Series event here.

Riggs' triumph also came three days after he became a father for the first time.

"It's been an awesome week for me, man," Riggs said. "Having a baby is just incredible, the most incredible thing you could ever do.

"Last night was the first night I've gotten eight hours of sleep. It's funny to have to go on the road to get any sleep."

Even though his track record is gone, Sauter had a successful run as he qualified second in a Chevrolet at an average speed of 174.357 mph.

Series points leader Jack Sprague will start third in a Chevrolet while Jason Keller (Ford) and Larry Foyt (Chevrolet) round out the top five.
