Farina Elia eliminated in Vienna

VIENNA, June 13 (UPI) -- Silvia Farina Elia of Italy may have made it to the fourth round of the French Open, but she did not do nearly as well this week.

Farina Elia, the top seed, was ousted by Austria's Patricia Wartusch in the second round Thursday at the Wien Energie Grand Prix.

Wartusch, who won her only WTA Tour event in 2000 in Bogota, cruised by Farina Elia, 7-5, 6-4 and advances to a quarterfinal matchup with Cristina Torrens Valero of Spain.

Farina Elia, ranked 11th in the world, successfully defended her title at Strasbourg the week prior to Roland Garros.

Three seeded players advanced to the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Third seed Barbara Schett defeated Barbara Schwartz in a battle of Austrian players, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. Schett will play Petra Mandula of Hungary in the next round.

Fifth seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland topped Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) and will meet Anna Smashnova of Israel in the quarterfinals.

Iva Majoli, the sixth seed, topped fellow Croatian Jelana Kostanic, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 and will face second seed and defending champion Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, who is ranked 18th in the world.
