TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, June 12 (UPI) -- No. 1 Marie-Gaianel Mikaelian of Switzerland moved into the quarterfinals Wednesday at the upset-filled Tashkent Open.
Mikaelian, No. 53 in the WTA rankings, recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Venezuela's Maria Vento-Kabchi in the second round. Mikaelian will face Nadeja Ostrovskaya of Belarus in the quarterfinals.
Ostrovskaya, ranked No. 235 in the world, was winning 6-1, 1-0 when Russian qualifier Olga Kalyuzhnaya retired.
Italy's Tathiana Garbin and Roberta Vinci each had straight-set wins Wednesday.
Garbin cruised past Germany's Adriana Barna, 6-1, 6-3 and Vinci ousted Lenka Nemeckova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-2.
The fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth seeds failed to survive the first round of this Tier IV event.
