MINNEAPOLIS, June 7 (UPI) -- The Minnesota Vikings Friday agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent wide receiver Derrick Alexander, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs for the past four seasons.
Alexander, 30, has played in 118 career games and started 97 of them during his eight-year career. He has 403 career receptions for 6,837 yards and 39 receiving touchdowns.
Alexander joins Viking wide receivers Randy Moss and Sean Dawkins as players with 300+ career receptions, 5,000+ receiving yards and 25+ receiving touchdowns. He has averaged 17.0 yards per catch during his career.
Alexander, 6-2, 206, was originally a first-round draft pick (29th overall) of the Cleveland Browns in 1994 out of the University of Michigan. He was an All-Rookie choice in '94, when he had 48 catches for 828 yards and two touchdowns.
Alexander played for the Browns from 1994-95 and then two seasons (1996-97) with the Baltimore Ravens, when the team relocated. He had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in Baltimore, with 1,099 yards receiving on 62 catches in 1996 and 1,009 yards on 65 catches in 1997.
Alexander signed with the Chiefs as an unrestricted free agent on March 2, 1998. He had 54 catches for 992 yards in his first season with Kansas City, and followed that up with 54 catches for 832 yards in '99.
Alexander had a career year in 2000, when he caught 78 passes for 1,391 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named Kansas City's Derrick Thomas Award winner in 2000 as the Chiefs' MVP.
His 1,391 receiving yards is a Chiefs' single-season record. He played in 13 games in 2001 and had 27 receptions for 470 yards and three touchdowns.
Alexander will practice with the team during this weekend's June mini-camp. He previously had visits with Tampa Bay and New England.
