Szott tears knee ligament

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., May 29 (UPI) -- The New York Jets suffered another blow to their offensive line when veteran guard Dave Szott tore his right ACL in a workout.

Szott, who signed as a free agent with the Jets after starting all 16 games for the Washington Redskins last season, was hurt in a non-contact drill and will need surgery.

"Dave Szott will have surgery to repair the injury within two weeks," coach Herman Edwards said. "We will await the results of the surgery before putting a timetable on his recovery."

Szott returned from torn biceps suffered in 2000 when he was with the Kansas City Chiefs and helped pave the way for Stephen Davis to rush for 1,432 yards last season. A seventh-round draft choice of the Chiefs in 1990, Szott played 10 seasons in Kansas City.
