IRL denies Tracy Indy 500 appeal

INDIANAPOLIS, May 27 (UPI) -- The Indy Racing League on Monday denied Paul Tracy's appeal of the outcome of Sunday's Indianapolis 500 won by Helio Castroneves.

"Team Green did not present anything to convince us to change our mind," said IRL vice president of operations Brian Barnhart.

CART team owner Barry Green contended that Tracy passed Castroneves before the yellow caution light came on on the 199th lap of the 200-lap race.

Both Green and IRL team owner Roger Penske attended an appeal Monday morning before Barnhat issued his ruling.

In one of the most dramatic and confusing finishes in history, Castroneves became the first driver in 31 years to win back-to-back Indianapolis 500s when he captured Sunday's race under a caution flag.

Hours after the race, however, Tracy and Team Green contended they won the race. They had one hour to file a protest after the officials results were posted at 8:40 p.m. EDT, some six hours after the race ended.
