Montoya captures pole at Monaco

MONTE CARLO, Monaco, May 25 (UPI) -- Juan Montoya of Colombia has captured the pole for Sunday's Formula One Monaco Grand Prix on the streets of Monte Carlo.

Montoya grabbed the top position from Scotsman David Coulthard late in Saturday's qualifying session and will start from the pole for the second time this season and the fifth time in his career.

The Colombian's last-minute effort was timed at one minute 16.676 seconds around the two-mile street circuit at an average speed of 97.940 miles per hour in his Williams BMW.

"The car looks really good and the tires are working well," said Montoya, who resides right alongside the track.

Montoya is the only other driver to earn points in all six grand prixs this season, next to Michael Schumacher. But he still is looking for his first victory in 2002. He did not finish last year's grand prix here due to a crash on lap 2.

Coulthard settled for the outside of the front row in a McLaren Mercedes with a time of 1:17.068. It is his top starting position this year. Coulthard may have even posted a better time, but for the usual traffic at Monaco.

Ferrari drivers Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello were the only drivers in the top-10 who used Bridgestone tires. All the other racers use Michelin models.

Both Ferrari drivers held the provisional pole during the one-hour session, but could not keep the pace as the session progressed.

Schumacher is third, with younger brother Ralf on the outside in a Williams BMW. Michael Schumacher posted a time of 1:17.118 after he picked up some debris in a second run which affected his vision, while Ralf Schumacher was a tad slower at 1:17.274.

Ferrari is seeking its 150th Grand Prix victory. Michael Schumacher is the defending champion of Formula One's most glamorous event. He also won the race in 1999, 1997, 1995 and 1994.

Barrichello is fifth on the grid even though he ran some fast laps. The Brazilian got caught behind Coulthard and traffic which slowed his time.

McLaren's second driver, Kimi Raikkonen of Finland, encountered some technical problems and clocked his first timed run 11th with just 17 minutes to go in the session. He managed to improve that to a respectable sixth in the end.
