DENVER, May 25 (UPI) -- Barry Bonds hit his 584th career homer, moving past Mark McGwire into sole possession of fifth place on the all-time list Saturday, but his San Francisco Giants suffered a 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

One of baseball's premier power hitters, Bonds hit Denny Neagle's first pitch in the fourth inning the opposite way over the left field wall to eclipse McGwire.

Bonds, who broke McGwire's single-season record when he hit 73 homers last year, is two home runs shy of tying Frank Robinson for fourth place. Bonds has 17 homers this season and shares the major league lead with Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs.

Terry Shumpert hit a three-run homer for the Rockies, who have won five straight to move above .500 for the first time since they were 2-1 on April 4.

Chris Nichting (1-1) allowed one run in two innings for his first major league win Neagle went four innings before leaving with a left knee contusion after getting struck by a line drive.

Jose Jimenez worked around a hit in the ninth for his 13th save.

Giants starter Kirk Rueter (6-2) was roughed up for six runs and nine hits over six innings. The lefthander walked two and struck out two.
