Thorpe in front after second round

PRINCETON, N.J., May 18 (UPI) -- Jim Thorpe used a birdie on the final hole Saturday to take a one-shot lead over John Jacobs after the second round of the Senior PGA Instinet Classic at the TPC at Jasna Polana.

The co-leaders after Friday's opening round, Thorpe and Jacobs looked like they would again be tied atop the leaderboard after Jacobs birdied the par-5 18th hole.

Moments later, however, Thorpe responded with a birdie, capping a bogey-free 3-under-par 69 and moving to 10-under 134. Jacobs shot a 70 on Saturday.

Thorpe and Jacobs are on course to shatter the tournament record of 11-under 199, set two years ago by two-time defending champion Gil Morgan. Morgan won with a 201 last season and holds the course record with a 63.

The duo seems to be turning the Senior Tour into their own personal duel. Three weeks ago, Thorpe defeated Jacobs in a playoff to win The Tradition and claim the Senior Tour's first major of the season.

Isao Aoki of Japan and 2001 Player of the Year Allen Doyle, both of whom are two shots back.
