Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
DURHAM, N.C., May 11 (UPI) -- Mike Dunleavy Jr. became the third member of national powerhouse Duke to leave school early, announcing his intentions Saturday to enter the NBA draft.
A forward with an NBA pedigree, Dunleavy joined fellow juniors Carlos Boozer and Jay Williams in forgoing his final year of college eligibility and entering the NBA draft. He indicated that he had not hired an agent, which would allow him to return to school if he does not like his draft position.
"It has always been my dream to play in the NBA," Dunleavy said in a statement released by the school. "I want to exercise my right to see where I stand in this year's draft so that I can make an informed decision for myself and my family."
"I am in full support of Mike's decision," said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, who also lost three early entries to the 1999 draft.
The 6-9 Dunleavy is a good shooter with good size and average athleticism who figures to play small forward in the NBA. He is projected as a mid- to late first-round pick.
Dunleavy averaged 17.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals as a junior and was a consensus second-team All-America. The son of former NBA player, coach and executive Mike Dunleavy helped Duke win the 2000 national championship as a sophomore.
The deadline for removing one's name from the NBA draft is June 19. The draft is one week later.
