Talaja scores Warsaw upset

WARSAW, Poland, May 6 (UPI) -- Silvija Talaja of Croatia posted the first upset at the $170,000 J&S Cup tennis tournament Monday.

The 24-year-old Talaja improved to just 2-4 on clay courts this season and halted a four-match losing streak with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over second-seeded Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus.

The 23-year-old Poutchek has dropped three of four matches since reaching the semfinals at Budapest.

Two other seeds were in action Monday and both were victorious. No. 6 Samantha Reeves of the United States got by Germany's Jana Kandarr, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 and eighth seed Stephanie Foretz of France defeated Russian Evgenia Koulikovskaya, 7-5, 6-2.

In a match between unseeded players, Seda Noorlander of the Netherlands cruised to a 6-1, 7-5 win over Canadian Jana Nejedly.
