LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 4 (UPI) -- The Kentucky Derby field was reduced to 18 early Saturday when Danthebluegrassman was scratched.
Trainer Bob Baffert said his colt "tied up" after a morning workout. Essentially, that means the horse suffered muscle spasms.
Danthebluegrassman was a surprise entrant for the 128th running of the Derby in the first place. He finished last in the Santa Anita Derby in his last previous start. His entry prevented Windward Passage from getting into the original 20-horse field.
He had been scheduled to start from post position No. 17 and would have been one of the longest shots on the board. Baffert also trains Illinois Derby winner War Emblem, who will start from post position No. 5 and is expected to be among the Kentucky Derby pace-setters.
Derby Day dawned partly cloudy and chilly at Churchill Downs. The forecast called for partly sunny skies and temperatures around 70 by the scheduled
6:04 p.m. (EDT) post time.
