BALTIMORE, May 2 (UPI) -- The Kansas City Royals got the anchor of their bullpen back Thursday, activating veteran closer

Roberto Hernandez from the 15-day disabled list.

Sidelined since March 22 with a strained right elbow, Hernandez made his season debut on Thursday, allowing two runs and three hits in one inning in a 4-1 loss to Baltimore.

In his first season with the Royals in 2001, Hernandez posted a 5-6 record with 28 saves. The righthander has 294 career saves, ranking 15th on the all-time list.

To make room for Hernandez on the roster, the Royals placed lefthander Brian Shouse on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 28, with a sore pitching elbow.

Shouse, 33, had no record and a 2.70 EA in 10 appearances this season.
