CHICAGO, April 30 (UPI) -- The Chicago White Sox roughed up Paul Abbott for five runs and six hits in just four innings en route to an 8-4 triumph over the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game series at Comiskey Park Tuesdayh night.
It was the Mariners' fourth loss in five games but just their first road defeat after beginning the campaign 10-0 away from Safeco Field.
Abbott (1-3) was demoted to the bullpen after yielding six runs in 2 2/3 innings a week ago in a 10-6 loss to Anaheim.
In this one, Abbott's replacement in the rotation, Joel Pineiro, allowed three runs and six hits in just two innings before Abbott was brought into a 3-3 contest.
After pitching a perfect third inning, the 34-year-old righthander struggled in the fourth, allowing a two-run double to Frank Thomas and a homer to Magglio Ordonez on the next pitch.
Chicago added a run off Abbott in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Jose Valentin before Seattle got back one in the ninth when Carlos Guillen tripled and scored on a wild pitch by Keith Foulke.
Thomas and Ordonez had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored apiece and Paul Konerko extended his league-leading hitting streak to 17 games with an RBI single in the first inning for the White Sox, who ended a three-game losing streak.
Dan Wright (3-2) allowed three runs and eight hits over seven innings to earn his first home win of the season.
