Sampras improved to 19-14 in his career battle with Agassi, which has spanned 14 years.

Agassi, who turns 32 on Monday, captured hardcourt titles at Scottsdale and Miami earlier this year.

A 13-time Grand Slam winner, Sampras is seeking his first claycourt crown since the 1998 Atlanta event.

Agassi had his ATP winning streak of nine matches come to an end, suffering just his third defeat in 21 matches this year.

Meanwhile, Roddick improved his career record here to 11-0. The Florida resident also won two matches in Houston three weeks ago as the United States defeated Spain in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.
