LINCOLN, Calif., April 20 (UPI) -- Christie Kerr fired a 5-under-par 67 at the Twelve Bridges Golf Club Saturday to extend her lead to five strokes at the Longs Drugs Challenge, moving within 18 holes of her first LPGA Tour title.
Kerr started the third round with a two-shot lead, but posted the best score of the day, one of only five in the 60s. She had six birdies and a bogey and had to fight off an insect at the 18th hole before rolling in a par putt that left her five strokes ahead of Australia's Jane Crafter.
"It was a fly. It is just hot out there and there are lot of bugs out there, but actually, when I was over the putt, it kept coming back at me and I just had to block it out," said Kerr, a 24-year-old Miami native who tied for second at the 2000 U.S. Women's Open for one of two career runner-up finishes.
"What can I say about my round -- 15 greens, 12 fairways and 29 putts. And besides that three-putt on 15, it was flawless out there. I played solid golf and I hope it keeps up tomorrow."
Kerr had a 54-hole total of 11-under 205 after missing the cut in her last start at The Office Depot.
"A couple of times, I have been within a shot or two or I have come from behind, tried to take the lead and then the winner will birdie the last hole," she said. "But right now, that is all irrelevant, and I know what to do tomorrow, and I just have to execute it and not let myself get in my own way."
Crafter is a 21-year veteran whose only LPGA win came 12 years ago. She could have been closer to the top of the leaderboard, but lipped out a birdie putt at the 12th hole and pulled her attempt for par at No. 16.
"After 21 years, I've learned not to get discouraged about others, but you feel like you are picking at something difficult," said Crafter, who lives in Florida. "I feel a little like Phil Mickelson following Tiger (Woods). Not that Cristie is Tiger, but it is similar when you follow someone who is playing well."
Heather Bowie and Koreans Hee-Won Han and Mi-Hyun Kim were tied for third at 5-under 211.
