Johnny Sauter captures pole

TALLADEGA, Ala., April 18 (UPI) -- Rookie Johnny Sauter led a family assault Thursday at Talladega Superspeedway as he won the pole for Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series Aaron's 312.

The youngest of three brothers competing Thursday, the 23-year-old Sauter drove his Chevrolet around the Superspeedway at an average speed of 188.764 miles per hour, capturing his first career pole.

Sauter was joined by his brothers, Jay and Tom, who qualfied fourth and 11th, respectively.

Johnny Sauter's best previous start was third at Texas Motor Speedway -- considered the fastest track on the circuit -- earlier this year.

Stacy Compton, who is participating in full schedules in both the Winston Cup and Busch series, qualified second in a Chevrolet with a speed of 187.511 miles per hour.

Defending pole winner Joe Nemechek was third in a Pontiac at 187.265 mph, Jay Sauter was fourth in a Chevrolet at 186.966 and Bobby Hamilton Jr. fifth in a Ford at 186.679 mph.
