NEW YORK, April 5 (UPI) -- The New York Mets, who have been seeking another veteran arm for their bullpen, Friday acquired Montreal Expos reliever Scott Strickland for pitchers Bruce Chen and Dicky Gonzalez.
The Mets also got minor league outfielder Matt Watson and minor league lefthander Philip Seibel from the Expos, who received infielder Luis Figueroa and a player to be named.
The 25-year-old Strickland appeared in a career-high 77 games last season and was 2-6 with nine saves and a 3.21 ERA. He surrendered just 67 hits in 81 1/3 innings and entered this year as the leading candidate to close games for the Expos.
In his lone appearance this season, Strickland tossed a scoreless inning against Florida.
But Montreal general manager Omat Minaya is a former Mets executive with extensive knowledge of their minor league system. In Chen, he gets a 24-year-old lefthander who can start or relieve.
Gonzalez, 23, also can pitch in the rotation or out or the bullpen.
