Nef wins women's giant slalom

FLACHAU, Austria, March 9 (UPI) -- Sonja Nef of Switzerland clinched the women's World Cup giant slalom title Saturday while claiming her third win of the season in the discipline.

Nef won with a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 42.96 seconds, finishing a comfortable .84 seconds ahead of Anna Ottosson of Sweden. Finland's Tanja Poutiainen of Finland was third in 2:44.49.

The 29-year-old Nef also won giant slalom races at Val d'Isere, France and Maribor, Slovenia this season and had two other podium finishes in eight races.

Ottosson and Poutiainen each reached a giant slalom podium for the first time in 2001-02. Poutiainen had finished second in a slalom race.

While sealing the giant slalom title, Nef remained third in the overall standings behind Michaela Dorfmeister and Renate Goetschl of Austria.

Dorfmeister, who was sixth in the final giant slalom race of the season, has clinched the overall title with only Sunday's slalom remaining.
