Jordan has knee surgery

WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Michael Jordan underwent successful arthroscopic surgery Wednesday morning and will be sidelined indefinitely, the Washington Wizards announced.

The surgery revealed torn lateral meniscus damage in his right knee and it was repaired by Dr. Stephen Haas, team physician for the Washington Wizards. The damage was the result of normal wear and tear and forced Jordan to the injured list for the first time since the second season of his illustrious career.

"Michael will rest over the new few days, then begin therapy," Wizards

General Manager Wes Unseld said. "At that point we will have an idea of the time frame for his return to action."

Jordan, 39, in his first season at Washington, has made a spectacular return to the NBA after a three-year hiatus, re-establishing himself as one of the game's best players while lifting the beleaguered Wizards into the thick of the Eastern

Conference playoff race.

Jordan, who earlier led the Chicago Bulls to six national championships in eight years, sat out last Wednesday's loss at Detroit with a sore knee. He played in a pair of games against Miami over the weekend and scored just 25 points, sitting out the final six-plus minutes of Sunday's loss.

He was replaced on the roster by teenage rookie forward Kwame Brown who was activated from the injured list after missing eight games with an ankle injury. The 6-11 Brown is averaging 3.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 33 games.
