Vikings give punter the boot

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Feb. 22 (UPI) -- One day after waiving three starters, the Minnesota Vikings have released veteran punter Mitch Berger.

One of the NFL's best punters, Berger was to enter the third year of a five-year, $6 million contract.

The Vikings moved under the salary cap after releasing three starters -- linebacker Ed McDaniel, safety Orlando Thomas and defensive end Stalin Colinet -- along with returner Troy Walters and defensive end Michael Boireau on Thursday.

Berger, who turns 30 in June, led the NFC in punting in 1999 and 2000 and ranked second in the conference last year with a 43.5-yard average, but finished the season on injured reserve.

The Vikings on Friday also waived receiver Lonny Mitchell.
