
BOGOTA, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- No. 8 Rita Kuti Kis of Hungary, last year's runner-up of the $467,000 Copa Colsanitas, needed three sets on Tuesday to get past the opening round of the tournament.
Kuti Kis beat Rika Fujiwara of Japan, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, to advance.
Fifth seeded Rossana De Los Rios of Paraguay had a much easier time against unseeded Lubomira Bacheva of Bulgaria, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Unseeded Alena Vaskova of the Czech Republic pulled off the upset of the day, defeating No. 6 Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain, 7-5, 6-1.
In other action involving unseeded players, Celine Beigbeder of France crushed Colombia wild card entry Romy Farah, 6-0, 6-1; Maria Antonia Sanchez-Lorenzo of Spain defeated qualifier Mariana Correa of Ecuador, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4; and Spanish qualifier Lourdes Dominguez downed Emilie Loit of France, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6).
Nuria Llagostera of Spain outlasted Catalina Castano of Colombia, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, and Andrea Vanc won the battle of Romanian qualifiers against Raluca Sandu, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
