Aamodt adds to medal collection

HUNTSVILLE, Utah, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Kjetil Andre Aamodt added to his record medal count Saturday and also added to the frustration of Stephan Eberharter.

A 30-year-old legend from Norway, Aamodt claimed his second gold medal in three days, taking the Olympic super-G alpine event on Snowbasin's Grizzly course with a time of 1 minute, 21.58 seconds.

It was the seventh Olympic medal for Aamodt and his record 17th at either the Winter Games or World Championships. He won the alpine combined Wednesday after finishing fourth in the downhill Sunday.

"I think I have more energy for this race," Aamodt said. He shortly after his super-G run.

Aamodt also held off a frustrated Eberharter, the 2001-02 World Cup champion who entered the downhill and this event as the favorite but settled for bronze and silver.

Eberharter finished just a tenth of a second behind Aamodt en route to his third Olympic medal. Countryman Andreas Schifferer won the bronze in 1:21.83, just ahead of another Austrian, downhill gold medalist Fritz Strobl.

Daron Rahlves was the top American finisher, placing eighth in 1:22.48. Rahlves, who was 16th in the downhill, was considered a medal contender after winning the super-G World Championships last year.

"Why I wanted to race here was for medals, hopefully for gold," he said. Teammate Bode Miller, who rallied for a dramatic silver medal in the combined, was not entered.
