Boston University wins 24th Beanpot

BOSTON, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Justin Maiser scored with just 1:12 left in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and Jack Baker added an empty net goal with only three seconds left to give Boston University a 5-3 win over Northeastern University Monday in the 50th annual Beanpot hockey tournament at the FleetCenter.

Northwestern had a 3-2 lead hading into the final period after Jim Fahey put the Huskies ahead with 10 seconds left in the second period. Mike Pandolfo quickly tied the game for the Terriers, making it 3-3 at 3:54 of the final period.

Boston University went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. After a Husky turnover in their own end, David Klema fed Maiser, whose wrist shot from the right slot beat Gibson at 7:52. The Terriers had a number of quality scoring chances in the opening period, but Gibson came up with numerous big saves, 13 in the period.

The Terriers added to their lead at 4:47. Ryan Whitney took the puck along the left boards and moved in front along, scoring glove side for his fourth goal of the year.

Momentum began to swing in Northeastern's direction when at 11:47 of the second period Mark Mullen was whistled for hooking, giving NU a power-play chance. The Huskies cut the lead in half at 12:37 on just their second shot of the period. Chris Lynch won a faceoff back to Fahey at the left point. Lynch then positioned himself in front of the BU net and deflected Fahey's shot past Sean Fields for his 15th goal of the year. NU tied the game less than two minutes later, again on the power play.

Mike Ryan had the puck in the right faceoff circle and passed to Lynch cutting to the net. Lynch put a shot on net that was stopped by Fields between his pads. But Lynch was able to get another crack at it and stuffed it past Fields. It was Lynch's third two-goal game of the season.

The Huskies then took the lead with only 10 seconds left in the middle period. Eric Ortlip poked the puck away from a Terrier player to Fahey who skated across the blueline, pulled up from about 50 feet away and fired a slapshot that beat Fields five-hole for the captain's 13th goal of the season.

The Terriers tied the game at 3:54 of the third period while on the power play. Bryan Miller threw the puck off the boards and it bounced in front to Pandolfo whose return shot beat Gibson to knot the score 3-3. Northeastern had a great chance to take the go-ahead goal with seven minutes remaining. Fields came out of the net and tried to play a loose puck, but his pass deflected off a crowd of players to Ryan. Ryan had a BU defender on him and his shot sailed wide of an open BU net.

It was the Terriers' 24th Beanpot title. The Huskies were going for their first championship since 1988.

In the tournament's consolation game, freshman goaltender Matti Kaltiainen earned his first career shutout and sophomore Tony Voce scored one goal and added one assist as Boston College defeated Harvard, 4-0.

Kaltiainen also earned the tournament's Eberly Trophy after earning the highest save percentage over two games. He stopped 42 of 46 shots for a .913 save percentage over the two-night tournament.
