John Lovett joins Clemson staff

CLEMSON, S.C., Jan. 31 (UPI) -- John Lovett, who earlier this month resigned as defensive coordinator at Auburn, was named to the same post Thursday at Clemson.

An assistant on the college level for 23 years, Lovett replaces Reggie Herring, who resigned to become defensive coordinator at Mississippi.

Lovett and offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone announced their resignations after Auburn completed the season with three straight losses. Both coordinators served under coach Tommy Tuberville at Mississippi from 1995-98 and the last three seasons at Auburn.

Lovett designed a defense that contained top-ranked Florida in a 23-20 win in October.

"When you look at Auburn's win over Florida and what they were able to do with Florida's offense, it certainly catches your eye," Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said. "No defense held the Gators in check like John's did last year."

The 51-year-old Lovett worked as defensive coordinator at Maine before arriving in Mississippi.
