Baldwin started last season with the Chicago White Sox before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He went 10-11 with a 4.42 ERA overall.

The Mariners won an American League-record 116 games last season, but needed to adjust their rotation after losing 15-game winner Aaron Sele to free agency.

"James is the type of pitcher we've been looking for to round out our pitching staff," general manager Pat Gillick said. "He is a veteran who will fit well in our rotation. He competes very well and should give us quality innings."

Baldwin joins a rotation that includes Freddy Garcia, Jamie Moyer and Paul Abbott. John Halama and Joel Piniero likely will battle for the fifth spot.

Baldwin won a career-best 14 games in 2000 before having offseason shoulder surgery. He has recorded at least 10 wins in each of his six full major league seasons and is 72-59 with a 4.98 ERA lifetime.
