Mariners, Baldwin reported in accord

BRISTOL, Conn., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- The Seattle Mariners apparently have rounded out their rotation by signing free agent righthander James Baldwin.

ESPN reported Monday that Baldwin, who started last season with the Chicago White Sox before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, has agreed to a one-year contract with an option for a

second year.

The cable network did not report financial terms, but said the deal hinges on Baldwin passing a physical.

The Mariners won an AL-record 116 games last season and needed to adjust their rotation after losing 15-game winner Aaron Sele to free agency. Baldwin would join a rotation that includes Freddy Garcia, Jamie Moyer and Paul Abbott. John Halama and Joel Piniero likely will battle for the fifth spot.

Baldwin won a career-best 14 games in 2000 and posted at least 11 victories each of the last six years. He is 72-59 with a 4.98 ERA for his career.
