Waldorf maintains one-shot lead

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Second-round leader Duffy Waldorf birdied two of the final four holes Saturday to maintain a one-stroke advantage after 54 holes of the Phoenix Open.

Waldorf fired a 4-under 67 that gave him a 17-under total of 196, a shot in front of Kenny Perry and Chris DiMarco. John Daly, who won a European Tour event last year for his first title since capturing the British Open in 1995, moved into fourth place at 198.

The final groups barely beat sundown after play was delayed early in the day while the second round was completed. The opening two rounds of the tournament were hampered by morning frost that pushed back starting times.

Among those who finished the second round early Saturday was 17-year-old Ty Tryon, who completed the final three holes of his first appearance as a PGA Tour member. Tryon added an even-par 71 at the TPC-Scottsdale course, but he had dug himself in a hole with an opening-round 77 and missed the cut.
