California 92, (22) USC 91 (OT)

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Shantay Legans scored the last five points of the game, including a 3-pointer with two seconds left in overtime, as California upset No. 22 Southern California, 92-91, Thursday in a hard-fought Pac-10 contest.

The Trojans led, 91-87, after Brandon Granville hit a pair of free throws with 37 seconds remaining. Legans scored on a layup 10 seconds later and the Golden Bears then tied up Granville with the ball at half court with the possession arrow in their favor with 14 seconds left.

"Towards the end we made some crucial stops," Cal coach Ben Braun said. "The jump ball at the end was big. We wanted to contain Granville on that possession. He was looking for the foul, but we got the big play."

The Bears worked the ball around to Legans, who nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing. USC freshman Errick Craven then dribbled upcourt and failed to get off a shot as time expired.

"It was a play for Joe (Shipp)," Legans said. "Joe wasn't open so I took the shot. So far, this is the biggest shot in my career at Cal."

Reserve Brian Wethers nailed a 3-pointer with four seconds left in regulation for a 79-79 tie to force the extra session. Wethers was 10-of-19 for a season-high 24 points for California (14-3, 5-2 Pac-10), which won its fourth straight game and is off to its best start since the 1959-60 campaign.

"It's been my job all season to come off the bench and give the team an energy boost," Wethers said. "I didn't want to lose so I hoped that the team could feed off my energy."

"The key guy was Brian Wethers," USC coach Henry Bibby said. "We couldn't contain him. He took over in the second half."

Shipp added 20 points and nine rebounds for the Bears, who trailed by as many as 10 points midway through the second half before making their comeback.

Paced by Shipp's 4-of-6 performance, California shot 54 percent (15-of-28) from the arc. The Bears' 15 3-pointers set a school record and tied a record for a USC opponent.

"They were the worst 3-point shooting team in the Pac-10 coming in, so you've got to go with the percentages," Bibby said. "But on the last play, we wanted our guys to be up on them."

Sam Clancy had 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead USC (14-4, 6-2), which failed to take sole possession atop the Pac-10 standings after Oregon's loss to Washington.

"It's tough to lose no matter who we lost to," Clancy said. "We shouldn't have lost this game."

David Bluthenthal added a season-high 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the arc and Granville chipped in 19 for USC, which shot 55 percent (11-of-20) on 3-pointers but lost for the second time in three games.

"They hits threes, we hit threes and they hit the big shot to win," Granville said. "They hit some tough shots and they get all the credit for their play tonight."

With the win, the Bears climbed to within one-half game of the Trojans and Ducks in the crowded Pac-10.

"It's very disappointing," Bluthenthal said. "We just have to put it behind us and get read for (Stanford) Saturday."
